The Athens Network

Athens alone has the distinction of its name being used by twenty-three other cities in the world. This is a unique circumstance, which at the same time demonstrates the symbolic value of Athens for the world culture. No other city in the world has lent its name to so many cities. Besides the fact that the capital of Greece is considered the name-giver of the cities in question there is no developed link and no particular relationship established between the cities of the world bearing the name of Athens.

These cities, which bring the name of Athens to the whole world, are gifted by history. They have the honour and the obligation, wherever they may be situated on the planet, to symbolise with their name as well their activities the meaning of democracy, of freedom, of development, of responsibility, of respect. In these modern times, where these values are more necessary and more essential than ever before, it is the obligation of the Athenians of the world to contribute to the creation of the world of Athens: a world of freedom, democracy, balance, a civilised, multicultural world.

The World of Athens has undertaken networking all these cities which carry the name of Athens: the network of all the “Athens of the World”. Our goal is to bring these cities closer, to learn their history, to all become ambassadors of the name “Athens” and everything it symbolises for the contemporary societies in the international community.
