The successfully conducted international online competition for the benches of Athens, Athens Bench Mark, invites and proposes designers and world citizens to leave their mark on the city of Athens in a uniquely creative way.

The Athens Bench Mark, which is committed to the goal of improving life in our city, is a collaboration between the World of Athens, the City of Athens and the broader program of ATHENS 2010, based on five focal points that reinforce the Green, Social, Digital, participatory and creative development of Athens.

The program is conducted entirely through the website www.athensbenchmark.com so that every citizen of the world can participate in it from any where on the planet. The competition runs from February 23rd until April 6th for designers and from February 23rd to April 14th for the public which will vote for the most popular projects.

Detailed program for 2 contests and a volunteer program:

  • The Athens Bench Mark is an industrial design competition open to creators under which certain specifications will design the new bench in Athens. Through online voting there will emerge 100 successful projects and an evaluation committee will select 3 for an award. The final three will receive cash prizes and at least one of the final designs will be mass produced to re-equip Athens.
  • The Future Bench is a competition of artistic creation without technical specifications. The only limit is the designers’ imagination asked to imagine the bench in the future. The 50 most popular works will be exhibited in a major exhibition Future Bench to be held in the City of Athens’ Technopolis and the creation with the most votes will receive the Audience Award Future Bench. The evaluation committee will select 3 projects that will receive cash prizes.
  • In addition to the competitions and online voting, Athens Bench Mark includes the promotion of greater citizen involvemement, a voluntary program. Participating volunteers will be organized into groups and under the guidance of specific technical supervisors of the City of Athens will start the work of renewing worn benches throughout the city.
